The Day That is going through an exciting period and we are looking for at least one new photographer to join the team! We devise a daily rota sympathetically based around everyone’s movements (family, other work, holidays etc), however we do need ensure that we have someone out photographing the dawn every day to ensure continuity of our daily sunrise archive. Customers frequently say that we have ‘the best job in the world’!
The Day That:
We’re a small emotional personalised dawn photography business – with customers all over the world who buy our prints to symbolise the day that something special happened to them or their friends such as a new baby, wedding, anniversary or other milestone event. The new dawn is the ultimate metaphor for the endless possibilities that lie ahead and our prints take pride of place on customer’s walls for a lifetime.
Every day one of the team heads out to capture the sunrise and the photos are then loaded onto our website immortalising that special moment in time for customers to choose, personalise and buy.
Outline of the role & person:
We’re looking for a creative early bird, happy to head out well before dawn on rota’d days and capture beautiful photos whatever the weather. In mid June this can be as early as 04:15am! In winter you can be the only person stood on the beach with a storm raging around you!
Usually you’d be out for around 1hr give or take overlapping sunrise time to capture the predawn light and any late glow that may come through clouds.
You’d then get home and shortlist your favourite 8-12 images from the shoot and edit to a print ready state. We prefer not to over manipulate images and aim to provide a true representation of the dawn on that day. However horizon straightenting and removal of dust spots, seagulls, skinnydippers, blemishes etc with a little bit of colour correction is expected for the final 8-12 images.
If you aren’t comfortable with doing the edit then this is fine too – the pictures will just need transferring to our server and then Kieran can retrieve, edit and upload instead.
Ideally you would be located somewhere near the sea with a good clear Easterly outlook – we usually shoot around the beaches of St Ives Bay where we can see the sun rise all year round. Consideration needs to be given as to how the sun changes position throughout the year.
Types of photographs – have a look through our archive to get an idea of our style, but essentially photos to mark the dawn of the day something special happened to the customer. We are happy for photographers to get a little more creative with their shots.
We do try and keep the photographs geographically neutral so as to broaden the appeal from a specific location. ie. try and not shoot in harbours or areas with a high density of people, boats or landmarks.
Experience of landscape / seascape photography is a must – including long exposures when there is no ‘classic sunrise’ light to work with. Unfortunately phone photographs aren’t quite up to it yet (from a print point of view) but we’re happy to be proved otherwise!
You must be able to think on your feet, plan ahead and choose the best location based on the weather conditions.
You must be very good at setting an alarm! We have missed very few dawns over the years!
Ability to work flexible rota’d dawn shifts – usually you’d do 2-3 days on then 6-7days off but the team are great at covering each other when the unexpected crops up.
Good rates of pay for the dawn & edit, enabling you to hold down another job and supplement your income.
Expected to capture a few shots / video on your phone and transfer over early for social media use.
Training, equipment and support can be given (subject to location).
If you fancy a little chat to find out more then do drop us an email to email@example.com or give us a call in the studio: 01392 793107 ideally we’d like to know early where you plan on shooting from and a few examples of previous seascape work.
Fancy yourself as the new Michael Kenna?
Unafraid to spring out of bed when the rest of the country is snoozing?
Grabbing gear, a mug of coffee and heading out to capture the beauty of a new day dawning can be one of life’s pleasures, but can also present its challenges!
Perhaps you’re simply keen to improve your skills and earn some extra pocket money at the same time?
If you’d like to get involved in something totally unique, we’d love to hear from you!
Currently our photographer rota is full, but don’t let that stop you getting in touch. We’re always on the look out for talented photographers in and around the South West and beyond. Send over some examples of your work and we’ll hook up for a coffee soon, or better still join us for a dawn shoot.
Between now and Christmas we are making our sunrise prints more affordable to everyone!
