Sunrise Photographers Needed!

Introduction:

The Day That is going through an exciting period and we are looking for sunrise photographers to join the team. We photograph at dawn 365 days / year regardless of the weather and devise a daily rota sympathetically based around the team's movements (family, other work, life, holidays etc). Our rota ensures that at least one of the team is out photographing the dawn every day to guarantee the continuity of our daily sunrise archive.
Customers frequently say that we have 'the most rewarding job in the world'

The new dawn is the ultimate metaphor for the hope, positivity and endless possibilities that lie ahead. Our prints immortalise that moment in time & take pride of place on customer walls for a lifetime.

About The Day That:

We're a unique personalised photography business - capturing beautiful photos at sunrise every day of the year.

We've photographed nearly every dawn since 2005, usually from the pristine beaches around St Ives, Cornwall. Customers purchase our prints to symbolise the day that something special happened to them or their family and friends such as a new baby, wedding, anniversary or other milestone event.

Every day one of the team heads out to capture the sunrise and the photos are then loaded onto our website immortalising that special moment in time.

A customer can then view their chosen day via the "Find your special day" calendar link on the website to choose, personalise and buy.

Customers can personalise the prints with a message such as "Ava's First Day - 10th August 2022" or "Dawn on our Wedding Day - 11/08/22" to make them even more sentimental to the recipient.

We are now looking for talented photographers to join the team!

Outline of the role & person:

We're looking for a creative early bird!

You need to be happy to head out well before dawn on your rota'd days and capture beautiful photos whatever the weather. You're ideally a creative earlybird who's able to adapt to the changing conditions and try and find the best shots possible around sunrise. In mid June this can be as early as 04:15am! In winter you can be the only person stood on the beach with a storm raging around you! It can be fun, glorious, challenging, beautiful and brutal all at the same time, but so rewarding!

Happiest when at a beach with a camera

Usually you'd be out at the beach for around 1hr give or take overlapping sunrise time to capture the predawn light and any late glow that may come through clouds.

Ability to edit photos

You'd then get home and shortlist your favourite 8-12 images from the shoot and edit them down to a print ready state. We prefer not to over manipulate images and aim to provide a true representation of the dawn on that day. However simple tasks such as horizon straightening or removal of dust spots, seagulls, skinnydippers, blemishes etc with a little bit of colour correction is expected for the final 8-12 images. If you aren't comfortable with doing the edit then this is fine too - the pictures will just need transferring to our server and then Kieran can retrieve, edit and upload to the website instead.

Lives somewhere with a good sunrise! (Obvs)

Ideally you would be located somewhere near the sea with a good clear Easterly outlook - we usually shoot around the beaches of St Ives Bay where we can see the sun rise up over the horizon all year round. Consideration needs to be given as to how the sun changes position throughout the year. i.e. what works in June may not work in December due to a headland and vice versa.

Creative style yet sympathetic to customer tastes

Have a look through our archive to get an idea of our style, but essentially we're after stylish seascape photos to mark the dawn of the day something special happened to the customer. We are happy for photographers to get a little more creative with their shots than what you see in the current archive. We do however try and keep the photographs geographically neutral so as to broaden the appeal away from a specific location. ie. we try and not shoot in harbours or areas with a high density of people, boats or landmarks where possible.

Knows their way around a camera

Experience of landscape / seascape photography is a must - including long exposures when there is no 'classic sunrise' light to work with. Unfortunately phone photographs aren't quite up to it yet, especially on the less sunny days (from a print point of view) but we're happy to be proved otherwise!

Organised

You must be able to think on your feet, plan ahead and choose the best location based on the weather conditions. You'll need to have everything ready the night before - batteries charged, spare SD cards, waterproofs etc. If something isn't going to work or something has come up then let us know and the team can cover.

Definitely a morning person and Able to set an alarm!

You need to be a morning person, able to spring out of bed and get set up on location nice and early (approx 30 mins before sunrise). You definitely need to be good at setting an alarm! We have photographed well over 6000 dawns have have only missed a handful due to unforeseen circumstances! No pressure 🙂 Top tip - don't hit snooze!

Flexible

Ability to work flexible rota'd dawn shifts - usually you'd do roughly 2-3 days on then 6-7days off (including weekend overlaps) but the team are great at covering each other when the unexpected crops up. We also try and find out any known unavailable days well in advance and plan around these.

Can shoot short videos & write a daily summary

You'd be expected to capture a few photos & short videos on your phone and transfer over early for social media use - just to help tell the story a little behind each dawn, along with a written writeup of what you saw or why you prefer a certain image from the day.

Doesn't mind a bit of rain

We're not going to lie - you can be pretty exposed on some dawns on the beach, you will get wet, you'll probably get cold, you might get water in your wellies, however these dawns can sometimes be the most rewarding!

Relistic that you won't always seen the sun

We understand that many photographers will only go out when conditions are gloriously perfect. We're a little different to that and have a fixed window of time each day to capture some photographic beauty. We're at the mercy of the UK weather and don't always see the sun. You'll need to use your skills to try and capture something beautiful within that fixed window of time.

Takes pride in their work

Pride in your work and pride in knowing that these prints may just be the most sentimental item on the customer's walls, instantly taking them back to that special moment in time.

Has other hidden talents

Initially we'd focus on getting you involved in the rota but we do try and get all the team involved in other aspects of the business based around their skills - this could include marketing, social media, video production, blog writing, product photography, sales, customer support, printing, assembly etc. If you just like taking photos then that's fine too.

Would like an extra income

Great rates of pay for the daily shoot & edit, enabling you to hold down another job and supplement your income for a little bit of work before breakfast! Training, equipment and support can be given (subject to location).
