Recently it was Childrenās Mental Health week and we wanted to add some positivity by holding a young persons Photography Competition. Itās been a tough time for young people during this last year and experts say that being outside in the fresh air helps with mental health issues, Doing something that stimulates the brain also helps so we thought we would combine the two and run a young persons photography competition to help spread some positivity and provide an incentive to help get your kids outdoors!
The photos can be taken on a camera or a mobile phone. Weāve collated a few tips and tricks to help take some wonderful photographs. (XXXXXXXX Link to Tips and Tricks page)Ā
The theme is “What makes me smile”
The competition will run from now until the 7th March).Ā
With half term coming up we thought this is a perfect time for young people to get outside and take some pictures. Photography makes you look at the world in a different way, makes you concentrate on the things around us and this, combined with the fresh air can only be a good thing.Ā
Our competition title is (XXXXXXX) as itās a time of optimism and hope, we are looking for pictures that will inspire us to be outside. This can be new growth in a garden, birds getting ready to nest or even beat us at our own game by capturing the warm light of a sunrise.Ā
They can also think outside of the box, be creative and different, maybe the light inside of a greenhouse or the warm glow of sunset light resting on an object. The ideas are endless and we want you to have fun with it so go for it.Ā
Ā
Each child can send in up to 3 photographs. Please submit via the form below.Ā Please also provide us with the childās first name, age, an email address you wish us to use and also where you are from. We will only show the picture with a first name, age and location.
Please don’t send us any pictures with identifiable people in them,Ā
By sending us these details you agree that we can show the work in this way.Ā
All pictures sent in will be added to an online gallery. We will then choose 10 from all the entries and ask our social media followers to vote for their favourite picture.Ā
We will then announce 1st and 2nd place photo with the winner receiving their photo framed and mounted and 2nd place will receive a print of their photo. The team here at The Day That will also choose one of the entries as our favourite and also send them a print too.
Plus extra bonus prizes from…. XXXXXX
We are really excited at holding this photography competition and canāt wait to see you the wonderful photographs that they will produce, so good luck to everyone, get out there and start taking pictures. Good luck.

Title – āWhat makes me smileā very positive
If you go with this title you will need to change the middle para next to the great scooter pic, it reads This can beā¦ā¦
change to āThis can be something that amuses you, maybe a pet, a funny scene or beat us at our ownā¦..
Simplify the age range to 10 and under and 11 – 16, so 2 categories.

A few Trips and Tricks to help improve your photography.
We donāt really want to give to many tips as there is enough information out there on how to take a good photograph but saying that we have just a couple of thoughts to help you on your way.
1. Have fun being the number 1 tip from us, get out and photograph what interests you and have fun doing it.
2. Be creative. Try and not just photograph what you see. Think about the light, think about the composition. Take your time, think about what you are photographing, donāt just snap it.
3. Experiment and Play, donāt be afraid to get it wrong. Make mistakes and enjoy the process.
4. If you are using a phone, try not to zoom in as it never really works very well. Get closer to your subject. To be honest, getting closer should be a tip on itās own.
5. It sounds obvious but shoot with purpose. If you are a parent helping a younger child or a teenager with your first camera, go out with an idea of what you want to photograph. Yes, take other pictures but have a āpurposeā it will really help you.
6. Take your time, think about what you are photographing, donāt just snap it.
7. This is a big oneā¦. Look for good light and maybe take pictures in the āGolden Hourā If you decide you want to take a picture of say a tree, choose when you want to take the picture. Early or late light is a great time as the light is usually so different to that of during the day.
8. Our 8th and final tip is to simply reiterate tip number 1 Make it fun and enjoy the process.
Itās February already, itās deep mid winter, itās freezing but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel with spring on itās way.
We wanted to start 2021 with a bang of positivity and so we have decided to launch the 2021 Young Photographer competition. Itās been a tough time for young people during this last year and experts say that being outside in the fresh air helps with mental health issues, Doing something that stimulates the brain also helps so we thought we would combine the two and run a young persons photography competition to help spread some positivity and provide an incentive to help get your kids outdoors!
Weāve some great prizes and will put the majority of photographs that we receive up on a gallery on our website. Go here for details on how to enter.
